Love and hate, Steve. Berlin has always been and still is a great place if you prefer city life. But it's become an even more challenging and exhausting city over the last 20 years because of the incredibly diverse crowd that calls it their (temporary) home. It's a melting pot of different cultures with different values, different worldviews, and different political attitudes. That's both a curse and a blessing. A curse because many of these groups are irreconcilably opposed to each other.
On the flip side, it forces me to constantly engage with all of this, which keeps me mentally sharp and continuously shifts my perspective on things.
The little house in the courtyard of a larger residential complex that I found two years ago lets me retreat for the first time since i live here and recover every now and then from this bustling city. That's made it somewhat easier to tolerate all the things I can't change.
Yes that seems right! Spent some time in Kreuzberg when I was writing my dissertation back in the day. I’m glad you have found a place to retreat from the hustle and bustle!
